my journey as a tattoo artist

Black Dog Tattooing, founded by Savanna Pearse, offers unique tattoo artistry in Sedgefield, south africa, specialising in fine line and nature-themed designs.
The Awakening:
I’ve always had a deep love for art, particularly painting during my high school years, and drawing has been a passion of mine since childhood. The intricate designs and personal stories behind tattoos captivated me, and when I finished high school, I felt a strong pull toward a career that combined my artistic skills with this unique form of expression. Tattooing felt like the perfect fit for me.
The Apprenticeship
Initially, I embarked on this journey largely as a self-taught artist, immersing myself in the fundamentals of design and technique. Along the way, I sought guidance from more experienced tattoo artists who generously shared their insights and tips. This process was one of the most challenging experiences I’ve ever faced; mastering the craft required immense dedication and resilience. However, my desire to excel and create meaningful art drove me to push through the difficulties and commit to doing it right. Each lesson learned and every piece created fueled my passion further, solidifying my resolve to become a skilled tattoo artist.
The First Tattoos
My first real tattoo on a client was a pivotal moment in my journey. It was a simple design, but the pressure was immense. I felt a mix of excitement and fear. Would I be able to create something beautiful? Would my client be happy? Fortunately, it turned out well, and seeing their joy solidified my passion for this art form.

The Evolution of Black Dog Tattooing
As I gained more experience, I focused on refining my skills and developing my artistic voice. I experimented with different styles—traditional, watercolour, fine line, blackwork—and found that I gravitated towards intricate designs that told a story. Building a portfolio became essential, as it showcased my range and attracted clients who resonated with my work.
I learned from others in the industry, sharing techniques and ideas that further enriched my artistry.
